DIAGNOSTIC TESTING - Stress Echo Test
As you prepare for your diagnostic test at Cardiovascular Associates, the following are the most frequently asked questions pertaining to each test. Please take a few moments to review the questions and answers that apply to the test you will be taking in order to make your visit to our offices go as smoothly as possible.
Stress Echo Test
Where will the test take place and how long will it last?
The test will take place in our office. The entire process should take approximately 1 hour.
How soon prior to my test should I arrive?
Please arrive 15-20 minutes prior to your test time.
What should I wear the day of the test?
Wear a two-piece outfit and comfortable shoes for exercise.
Can I eat or drink anything the day of the test?
Please eat a light meal at least one hour prior to your appointment time.
Should I take my medicine that day?
If you are on a beta blocker or any medication that may slow your heart rate, you should not take it for 24 hours prior to your test, unless your physician tells you otherwise. Go ahead and take all your other medications and if you are a diabetic, make sure your blood sugar is adequate.
What should I bring with me?
A list of your medications, and the referral or the prescription from your primary care physician or the physician who is ordering the test.
Can I have my morning coffee or cigarettes that day?
No. We do not want you to have any caffeine or nicotine the day of the test. This includes chocolate, decaf coffee or colas and tea.
What happens when I arrive for my test?
After you check in with the secretary, you will be brought back to a room where electrodes will be placed on your skin. You will then be asked to lie on an echo bed while the sonographer obtains ultrasound images of your heart at rest. After these images are obtained you will then be asked to walk on a treadmill. We will be monitoring your EKG, and blood pressure while you are on the treadmill.
Who will be supervising my test?
You will be supervised by an RN or an Advanced Practice Nurse/Nurse Practitioner who has in-depth training in Cardiovascular testing. Our physicians are always available and are present throughout our diagnostic lab.
What if I get chest pain while I'm on the treadmill?
Let the nurse or technician know right away.
What happens after they stop the treadmill?
You will be asked to quickly move to the echo bed so that the sonographer can take more ultrasound pictures of the heart After these images are obtained we will continue to monitor your EKG, heart rate and blood pressure. Once your vital signs are back to baseline you may leave.
When do I get the results?
The doctor that ordered the test or their nurse should call you within 3-5 days. If you do not receive your results after this time, please call the doctor who ordered the test.
Do I have to follow any special instructions when I get home?
No, just remember to drink water after you exercise.
